I dropped a 302 w AOD transmission into my 1949 Ford pickup. The 302 and tranny are from a 1985 Lincoln Continental. I am wiring the truck myself so I need to get a hold of the wiring schematic for the neutral safety switch, backup lights, etc or at least a pin readout of the connectors on the transmission.
The AOD (automatic overdrive) is a four speed automatic transmission with overdrive.Introduced in 1980, it was Ford's first four speed automatic overdrive transmission. The gearset design is based on the Ford "X" automatic transmissions used during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. The AOD replaced many of Ford's older transmissions such as the C4, C5, and light duty applications of the FMX.
The AOD does not require any wiring to be hooked up. The wiring is for what was stated earlier (Nuetral switch, reverse light). What you do need is a kickdown bar going from your carb to the valve body (there is a small lever above the shift linkage) in order to open up the valve body. chevy uses vaccuum, Ford used mechanical.
Ford later used this transmission as a basis for their newer overdrive transmissions, the electronic overdriven AOD E, which was used beginning in 1993 and in the 4R70W which was used on ’99 and up production cars and trucks. Using an AOD transmission will effectively lower a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio down to a fuel saving 2.49:1.
AOD factory evolution includes larger servos to increase durability. Early on, the AOD was fitted with the “C” overdrive servo, which is the smallest. Beginning in 1985, Ford enlarged the overdrive servo (known as the “B” servo), which increased apply force by 30 percent, according to Ford.
The AOD transmission is not what most would consider a sporty transmission: Drivers are limited to shifting from first gear to drive to overdrive. The automatic shifts can occur well below red line leaving drivers wanting more out of their 1985 Mustang transmission. The second generation T 5 transmission in the 1985 Mustang was a great improvement over previous Mustang manual transmissions.

I just put an 85 AOD transmission in a 1995 F150. My linkage is correct and I have Park, Reverse, and Neutral, but when I go to Drive, 2, or 1, it wont shift out of first gear. What should I do? There was a plug on top of the transmission when I pulled it out of the 85 Ford, what does that do?
